February is American Heart Month. Did you know that the leading cause of death in people over the age of 65 is heart disease?  Did you also know that you can prevent it? Here are some tips to help prevent heart disease:

  • Diet – This doesn’t mean you need to go on a diet. This means you need to evaluate your diet. Am I taking in the proper amount of nutrient-rich foods? Lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and dairy

  • Exercise – 150 minutes/week.  Break it up into 20-25 minute workouts daily. Exercising does the following:
    • Exercise helps to normalize your glucose, insulin, and leptin levels
    • Exercise encourages your brain to work at optimum capacity
    • Exercise helps reduce stress, depression and anxiety
    • Exercise boosts energy
    • Exercise promotes better sleep
    • Exercise strengthens your heart and cardiovascular system
    • Exercise lowers your blood pressure
    • Exercise improves balance and joint flexibility

  • Water! – Drink more of it! The general rule of thumb is to drink eight- 8 oz glasses of water/ day.
    • Drink 2 glasses of water after waking up- this helps to activate internal organs
    • Drink 1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal (3x/ day)- this helps with digestion
    • Drink 1 glass of water before taking a bath or showering- this helps to lower blood pressure
    • Drink 1 glass of water before going to bed
